International Influence

In 1959 Tanaka’s work was selected for the first cover of the important new Graphic Design magazine. This was a great honor, as the selection committee bypassed well-known designers to choose the newer talent of Tanaka. Also at this time, Tanaka partnered to jointly establish the Nippon Design Center, becoming its art director in 1960. Tanaka’s poster design for the 10th World Design exhibition that accompanied the 10th World Design Conference in Tokyo in 1960 shows a constructivist influence and focused attention on his design capabilities. In 1961 Tanaka traveled to New York, meeting Herb Lubalin, Ivan Chermayeff and Lou Dorfsman. There he was influenced by international typographic design. Derived from the Swiss school and traceable to the Bauhaus, this approach achieved a modern effect by emphasizing the mathematical division of space; the result was clarity in the presentation of images and written information.
